The following is an excerpt of a story from MassLive.

The Bay State’s life sciences industry outpaced its competitor states in both the research and development and bio manufacturing jobs it added last year, according to a newly released report.

The state’s biopharma research and development workforce grew by 8.5% last year, beating out California and Pennsylvania (6.8%) as well as New Jersey (1.9%), according to a report released Wednesday by MassBio, an industry trade group.

The data was first reported by Axios.

Employment in the state’s bio-manufacturing workforce, meanwhile, rose by 6.3%, again beating out New Jersey (5.8%), as well as Maryland (4.6%) and North Carolina (1.8%), the report showed.

All told, nearly 114,000 people statewide were employed in the biopharma industry at the end of last year, according to the report.

The past year’s growth confirms Massachusetts’ status as the “global epicenter” of the life sciences sector, Democratic Gov. Maura Healey said of the data drop.

“We are the home of life-changing innovation because we have recognized the unique opportunity to harness the incredible talents and resources that we have here, and back them with real investments,” Healey continued.
